Last night during dinner Tim noticed flashing lights on the walls in our living room. First thought was our neighbors next door. They are older and have had some health issues over the past year. Realizing they are safely at their winter home we rushed to the front door to see smoke billowing out of the house across the street's roof, from places there should be no holes.
There were 5 firetrucks on the street, 3 cops, and an ambulance. Good ole city employees!!
Luckily there was no one home and they got the dog out of the house. We never saw flames but every time they busted a window a new plume of smoke came out.
Our hearts were breaking for the woman that lives there. She such a nice lady.
We all watched for about an hour as it unfolded. As far as we could see there was no outside flames, which is a great thing and no damage to the front of her house (except the windows and door) which is an even better thing. All the restoration crews where there this morning so hopefully it really wasn't that bad. Just scary for a friend and made us check our smoke detectors once more and make sure everything was off before we headed to bed.
One thing that did stand out last night was the compassion of my oldest. While were were sitting there watching the firemen and trucks Hayden said to me, "this is sad Mom. Her house is wrecked." I reassured him that no one was hurt. Then he said, "Maybe we should call that show you watch and they can build her a new house.(Makeover Home Edition)" I thought it was sweet that he was thinking of something like that.

It is very sad & disheartening to watch a fire happen to people on one's street. Across the street & a few houses down from us there was a fire in early Novemeber. I saw flames shooting out of one side of the house but what I didn't see was that they were going out the other side of the house as well & actually melted the next door neighbors siding from their house. The house that had the fire still has boards covering the windows & nothing else has been fixed. They weren't home when it started as far as I heard. Gabby was already at school & Braly was home watching out the window, they had our street blocked from any thru traffic and Braly kept saying, that is so sad, that is awful, I bet they are really upset about their house. It is nice to see the young ones with such compassion in them. May they never lose it. Glad to hear no one was hurt & that the damage sounds minimal.
Of all the things that scare me the most if a house fire. A good friend lost her entire home to a fire several years ago and she is parinoid about unplugging things now because it was a falty door bell that set her fire off. Hayden is such a caring young man... he has a heart of gold just like his mom and dad.
